Bituminous binders in the Road Construction Industry
Transport infrastructure: “SA’s most valuable public asset” (C. Ramaphosa, 2015)
This asset is best maintained and rehabilitated with bituminous products. LIESEN’s comprehensive supply programme of bituminous road construction materials offers the right solution for your requirements.
Bituminous materials are adhesive, waterproof, strong, durable, versatile & economical.
In many road construction applications bitumen emulsions provide a safe and environmentally friendly system since the risks of fire, burns and emissions are avoided and the processes use less energy.
Bitumen emulsions are often used in methods for labour intensive & enhanced construction of bituminous surfacing.

Road Applications
A prime coat is a spray application of a suitable bituminous binder to a non-bituminous (granular) layer prior to the application of further bituminous materials or layers.
Cutback bitumen | MC10, MC30, MC3000 | SANS 4001-BT2 |
Spray grade emulsion | Inverted emulsion | SANS 4001-BT5 |
Bond coats (also known as tack coats) are sprayed bituminous binders applied either to a primed granular substrate or a bituminous layer to promote adhesion between the existing surface and an asphalt layer being placed on it. Usually stable mix (anionic or cationic) bitumen emulsion is diluted 1:1 with water to achieve full coverage of the underlying layer with a thin residual bitumen film.
Stable mix grade emulsion | SS60 | SANS 4001-BT3 |
Stable mix grade emulsion | CSS60 | SANS 4001-BT4 |
A slurry is in fact a cold-prepared asphalt mixture used as either a maintenance measure or as a surfacing – or part thereof – in new construction. “Microsurfacings” are slurries that are specially prepared and applied in thicker layers (say > 10 mm) and incorporate purpose-made rapid setting emulsions.
Quick set
Modified cationic emulsion | AC-E1 | specified in TG1 |
Modified cationic emulsion | AC-E2 | specified in TG1 |
Slow set
Stable mix grade emulsion | SS 60 | SANS 4001-BT3 |
Stable mix grade emulsion | CSS 60 | SANS 4001-BT4 |
Sealing cracks to prevent ingress of water into the road pavement.
Hot applied elastomer modified (width of 5 – 15 mm):
Modified bitumen | C-E1 | specified in TG1 |
Bitumen rubber | C-R1 | specified in TG1 |
Cold applied emulsion elastomer modified (width of 2 – 4 mm):
Modified bitumen emulsion | CC-E1 | specified in TG1 |
Spray seals:
- e.g. Sand/ Grit seals, Single stone seals (including single stone and sand blinding layer), Multiple stone seals (Double or Triple stone seals) and Graded aggregate seals e.g. Otta seals.
Combination seals:
- e.g. Cape Seals (Single stone seal with one or two layers of slurry) and Slurry-bound Macadam seals.
Cover spray
-
Application of emulsion or diluted emulsion covering the aggregate and forming part of the initial seal design. A cationic spray grade emulsion is normally used for this purpose.
Fog spray or rejuvenation spray
-
Application of anionic emulsion, diluted anionic emulsion or invert emulsion rejuvenator for purposes of adding additional binder to the seal or rejuvenating the seal at a later stage of the seal life.
The selection of binders should always be based on specific needs and particular constraints and should never be regarded as a substitute for good design and construction practice.
Spray seals consist of ordered applications of one or more bituminous products and aggregates. A wide range of bituminous binders is used for spray seals, such as:
Penetration grade bitumen | 70/100 | SANS 4001-BT1 |
Penetration grade bitumen | 150/200 | SANS 4001-BT1 |
Cutback bitumen | MC 3000 | SANS 4001-BT2 |
Elastomer modified bitumen | S-E1 | specified in TG1 |
Spray grade emulsion | CRS 60, CRS 65, CRS 70 | SANS 4001-BT4 |
Modified bitumen emulsion | SC-E1 (65) | specified in TG1 |
Modified bitumen emulsion | SC-E2 (70) | specified in TG1 |
Bitumen rubber | S-R1 | specified in TG1 |
Cold mixes use less energy and produce fewer emissions than hot mixes. Cold mix plants are lower cost, simpler and more mobile than hot mix plants and emulsion mixes lend themselves to on-site and in-place manufacture. The ability to stockpile material for future use leads to less waste and reworking than with hot mix.
Premix grade emulsion | CMS 60 | SANS 4001-BT4 |
Premix grade emulsion | CMS 65 | SANS 4001-BT4 |
Bitumen stabilisation normally entails the upgrading of the quality of readily available pavement materials by treatment with relatively low concentrations of bitumen (normally < 3% by mass). The use of stable mix grade enables proper mixing of the binder with dense graded materials with high fines content and extended workability periods for good dispersion.
Stable mix grade emulsion | SS 60 | SANS 4001-BT3 |
Stable mix grade emulsion | CSS 60 | SANS 4001-BT4 |
Foam bitumen | 70/100 | SANS 4001-BT1 |
LIESEN-Bitunaht is specifically used in hot mix asphalt applications as bonding agent in the longitudinal joint. In “cold joint” situations optimum bonding is achieved between existing and newly laid hot mats. The LIESEN-Bitunaht provides maximum protection against parting or splitting of the joint.
- Bitunaht H: roads carrying low to medium volume traffic
- Bitunaht HP: heavily loaded roads
LIESEN-Bituplast L is a ready-to-use, cold applied and fast curing polymer-modified bitumen compound with fibre and mineral reinforcement. As a joint sealant LIESEN-Bituplast L is very pliable due to its adhesive and solvent–based constituent materials and therefore also fills pores and depressions. Once applied, the compound is almost immediately waterproof, even if it has not yet set completely. LIESEN-Bituplast L is particularly suitable for joints in asphalt surface layers (both longitudinal and transverse).
LIESEN-BITUREP: Rainy periods often signal the onset of road damage. To repair such damage we can offer you our cold-applied repair material – BITUREP-E (emulsion-based) and BITUREP-L (solvent-based) for smaller repair works.
